The Shar-Pei is a truly unique dog with an equally unique personality, and it is impossible not to fall for its charm.
Some say the Shar-Pei has the temperament of a cat. We prefer to describe it as a bit mischievous, happiest when allowed to do exactly as it pleases: sleep, play, sleep some more, and enjoy plenty of cuddles. It’s a dog full of personality, and the key to a well-balanced temperament, true to the breed standard, lies in responsible breeding and early education.
A Little Stubborn, but Deeply Affectionate
The Shar-Pei adapts easily to almost any lifestyle, whether you live in a flat, in town, or out in the countryside. What matters most to this breed is staying close to its owner.
Generally not a highly energetic dog, the Shar-Pei tends to spend much of its time resting. As with people, though, every dog is different, and your breeder can help guide you towards the puppy whose personality best matches your lifestyle.
Addressing the « Aggressive » Stereotype
We can assure you this simply isn’t true, it’s one of the many unfair stereotypes attached to the Shar-Pei’s temperament.
It’s fair to say that some Shar-Pei in the past did show aggressive tendencies, often alongside skin problems, usually the result of breeders producing as many litters as possible without careful selection, at a time when the breed was in high demand and at risk of disappearing entirely.
Fortunately, breeders working conscientiously to improve the breed have restored the temperament we know and love today: loving and gentle with their family, and particularly attentive with children.
Above all, the Shar-Pei’s character reflects courage, loyalty and intelligence. Raised alongside other animals from a young age, it will happily accept them too, and its natural hunting instinct can be channelled through early training. It isn’t especially fond of rain or getting wet, though a few individuals do enjoy splashing in puddles. It is also a naturally clean dog, generally preferring to relieve itself well away from the house.
Please note: your Shar-Pei’s temperament will also depend a great deal on how you raise it. It’s important to set clear rules from the very first day it arrives in your home. You are the one in charge, like any dog, a Shar-Pei should be treated as a much-loved member of the family, never simply as an object.
